PANORAMA (WILHELM ANDERMANN VERLAG) - CHECKLIST
Series Note: Each title in this series featured a city (e.g. Berlin, Paris, London, Naples), country (e.g. Austria, Bermuda, Finland, Greece), geographical region (e.g. The Black Forest, Provence, Sicily) or cultural landmark or landmarks (e.g. Bavarian Royal Castles, French Cathedrals). The series' focus was worldwide from the Caribbean to Asia to America, although the emphasis is mainly on the various lands of Europe.
Most of the titles were published in German, English and French editions (that is, with their title and introductory essay in those languages), and were sold in bookshops across the world.
Each book contained an introductory essay and included color plates (normally 30 in number) with each plate accompanied by a caption in English, French and German. The fact that each photo plate was captioned in three languages suggests that the photos for all of the different language editions of each title were printed in one run in order to save on printing costs.
The format was hardback with dust wrapper and the size was small octavo (c. 8 x 10 inches), a compact size which made it portable and easy to handle while traveling.
Some of these books could be classified as travel literature or even as travel guides (but without details on hotels, restaurants, etc). Other titles would appeal to fans of art, history and culture. The majority of the books would appeal to readers attracted to their stunning photography of breathtaking landscapes, architectural marvels, and cultural highlights. The books would be of interest both to travelers and book collectors.
In the years 1958-1969 many of the titles were released the United States under the Doubleday & Company, Inc., New York imprint and from 1959 many titles were jointly published for the Australian market by Wilhelm Andermann, Munich and Curzon (Australia) Publishing Co. Pty. Ltd.
