LIBRARY OF USEFUL KNOWLEDGE (BALDWIN & CRADDOCK; CHARLES KNIGHT; ETC.)
Series Note: "Library of Useful Knowledge
A series of 32-page treatises, first published in 1827, and issued fortnightly under the direction of Lord Broughams Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK). Subscribers paid 6d. for each part; it was claimed that the closely printed double columns contained as much reading matter as 100 ordinary pages. Often written by SDUK committee members, these pamphlets were mainly scientific or historical, ranging from natural philosophy to geometry, calculus, and the lives of eminent men. The earlier scientific numbers sold between 22,350 and 27,900 copies. By 1832, however, interest had fallen, with an average sale of 6,000. Among explanations for the ultimate failure of the venture, are its often leaden approach to already difficult material, the reluctance of the society to publish on politics, and the high price of the pamphlets themselves."
